The original Great North Road, built by the Romans, passed directly through Newark and this gave the town strategically great importance. With its Civil War connections, 12th Century Castle, ancient cobbled Marketplace, Church of Mary Magdalene, beautiful old buildings steeped in history, Newark is, most certainly, a very interesting place to visit. It has a full Calendar of Events for the year and there are theatres, museums, award winning eating places and some wonderful and interesting shops to visit. Newark is also famous for its Antiques Trade and is host to the largest Antiques Fair in Europe which is held every two months at The Newark Showground and at Swinderby.
